ZARI AGRI · Tomato · pests

Tuta absoluta can build up quickly because larvae feed inside leaves, shoots and fruit. Early scouting is more useful than waiting for obvious crop loss.

What does the damage look like?

Larvae create irregular mines inside tomato leaves, often leaving dark frass. Shoots and stems may also be attacked. On fruit, small entry holes and galleries can lead to secondary rots and loss of market quality.

Confirm the pest, not only the symptom

Leaf mines can be caused by more than one insect. Open fresh mines and look for larvae, then use pheromone traps to monitor adult moth activity. Trap catches support decisions but should not be the only reason for a spray.

Build an integrated plan

  1. Remove heavily infested residues and volunteer tomatoes where practical.
  2. Inspect seedlings before transplanting.
  3. Scout crops regularly and use pheromone traps for trends.
  4. Protect beneficial insects and use compatible biological options where available.
  5. Remove badly damaged fruit and dispose of infested material safely.

Use pesticides carefully

Use only products registered locally for tomato and Tuta absoluta and follow the label. Repeated use of the same mode of action selects resistance, so rotate effective groups according to local resistance-management advice. Broad-spectrum products may also remove beneficial insects.

Keep records

Record trap catches, fresh mines, fruit damage, treatments and follow-up results. This helps separate old damage from a growing infestation and shows which actions are working.

A single mined leaf is not enough to confirm Tuta absoluta. If uncertain, send clear photos of the mine, larva and fruit damage to a crop protection specialist.
