Farming and production regions
The central highlands and the Alaotra basin are important rice landscapes, while SAVA in the northeast is associated with vanilla. Cloves are prominent along the eastern coast; the Sambirano valley around Ambanja is known for cocoa. Southern farming faces a different water constraint, making drought-tolerant staples, fodder and livestock management particularly important. A national crop total must never be presented as a volume immediately available for export.
Processing and added value
Value is added through rice milling, vanilla curing and grading, clove drying and distillation, cocoa fermentation, coffee processing and fruit packing. For vanilla, green pods and cured beans are different products: moisture, length, defects and traceability determine commercial suitability. Cocoa buyers need fermentation and drying records. Better storage and reliable energy can matter as much as increasing cultivated area.
Forests and ecotourism
The Atsinanana rainforests include internationally important protected landscapes such as Masoala and Ranomafana. Andasibe is another major forest destination, while western dry forests and southern spiny vegetation offer distinct ecosystems. Farm visits, local guides and small accommodation businesses can connect conservation with rural income. Vanilla agroforestry should strengthen existing farm landscapes without clearing natural forest to establish new plantations.
Cities, ports and markets
Antananarivo is a commercial and administrative centre; Toamasina is a major maritime gateway. Antsirabe and Fianarantsoa connect highland production and processing, while Sambava serves the northeastern vanilla zone and Ambanja the cocoa region. Mahajanga and Toliara connect western and southern markets. Inland transport time, road condition and aggregation costs should be assessed separately from ocean freight.
Products and trade opportunities
Potential ZARI opportunities include traceable vanilla and cloves, well-fermented cocoa, fruit packing, small rice mills and drying equipment. An importer should request the crop year, origin district, batch specification, analysis, packing, shipment window and a comparable delivered quotation. These are opportunity areas, not verified stock or guaranteed buyers. Hotel supply can also reward consistent local vegetables, eggs and fruit.
Risks and development priorities
Cyclones, irregular rainfall, storage losses and volatile spice prices affect production and cash flow. The FAO update of September 2026 describes a paddy recovery from the reduced 2025 level but still below the five-year average, pending official figures. Investment decisions therefore need regional evidence and a working-capital plan rather than an assumption that one national harvest trend applies everywhere.
Recent figures and comparability
Vanilla figures below are the FAOSTAT series reproduced by a secondary provider and marked as estimates. They are not export shipments or green-pod purchases. No definitive national tonnage is assigned here to the 2026 rice harvest; the latest FAO assessment remains provisional. Comparisons of rice must explicitly distinguish paddy from milled rice.
Production, exports, area and growth rates are different indicators and must not be added together. Scroll the table horizontally on small screens.
