Islands, farming and nature

Rodrigues

Rodrigues is an autonomous island within the Republic of Mauritius, with a distinct agricultural and cultural profile. Small mixed farms, honey, livestock and local food products matter alongside tourism and fishing. Rodriguan Creole is closely related to Mauritian Creole but has local usage that deserves attention. Main-island sugar statistics are not a proxy for Rodrigues.

Farming and production regions

Maize, beans, vegetables, fruit, lime and livestock feature in the island's farming landscape. Beekeeping is an important niche, while water scarcity and soil erosion shape production choices. Mixed cropping and livestock can share resources, but grazing pressure needs management. Rainwater storage, suitable fodder and soil cover are practical priorities where regular irrigation is limited.

Processing and added value

Honey extraction and bottling, chilli preparations, fruit preserves and small-scale livestock processing can retain value locally. Product identity matters: Rodriguan origin should be supported by records, not just a label. Honey needs clean handling, controlled moisture and appropriate storage. Producers can benefit from shared packing and distribution where individual volumes do not justify large installations.

Forests and ecotourism

Grande Montagne and Anse Quitor are important native-habitat restoration sites. The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation's Solitude nursery supports the propagation of native plants used in restoration. These landscapes can connect environmental education with tourism. Tree planting should favour appropriate native species in conservation areas; a wooded slope is not automatically equivalent to restored endemic forest.

Cities, ports and markets

Port Mathurin is the main administrative, port and commercial settlement. Mont Lubin is an important interior centre, while La Ferme and coastal villages connect farming, markets and visitor accommodation. Rodrigues does not have a network of large cities: its page therefore distinguishes key settlements from metropolitan centres. Shipment to the main island requires separate scheduling and packaging.

Products and trade opportunities

Potential opportunities include authentic honey, local preserves, selected horticultural products, water-saving equipment and small processing systems. Producer groups may improve collection and consistency for hotels or mainland buyers. Before quoting, confirm the batch, season, origin, laboratory requirements, packing and realistic dispatch frequency. Scarcity or island reputation alone does not guarantee a premium price.

Risks and development priorities

Dry periods, cyclones, transport interruptions and limited economies of scale affect farm businesses. Beekeeping also depends on forage and healthy colonies. Investment should be based on repeatable volumes, water availability and maintenance capacity. Links between agriculture and ecotourism work best when producers retain a fair share of spending and visitors respect sensitive habitats.

Recent figures and comparability

The 2024 agricultural census estimates 42 tonnes of honey for July 2023–June 2024 and 2,937 productive hives on 30 June 2024 in Rodrigues. These are preliminary census results, not calendar-2025 output. A 2025 statistical digest is listed, but its production tables were not retrieved; no invented year-on-year trend is shown. The farm count follows the census scope excluding cane-only and tea-only holdings.

Production, exports, area and growth rates are different indicators and must not be added together. Scroll the table horizontally on small screens.
