Production and exporting origins

APEDA examines Indonesia, the Philippines, Costa Rica, China, Brazil, India, Nigeria, Mexico, Thailand and Colombia as production origins. Costa Rica and the Philippines are major fresh-export suppliers. Crop output is not exportable stock. Compare Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Benin and Togo by variety, packing station and available freight service.

Togo pineapple: dated production evidence

The ministry’s May 2023 investment plan cites production of 44,391 tonnes in 2022 versus 30,000 in 2019. These are historical observations, not 2026 output. Growing areas include Maritime (Ahepé, Tchekpo, Adangbé), eastern Plateaux (Atakpamé), western Plateaux (Danyi) and south-western Centrale. Confirm collectable volume and each operator’s certification instead of assuming all fruit is organic.

Export varieties and availability

MD2 serves the mainstream fresh trade; Smooth Cayenne also serves processing. Sugarloaf and Victoria address particular segments. Suitability depends on journey and buyer specification: flavour alone does not establish fitness for a long sea voyage. Several major origins supply almost year-round; request a weekly harvesting and packing schedule.

World importers and African consumption

The 2024 customs table identifies markets, not confirmed end customers. For African deficit markets, assess wholesalers, hotels, retailers and processors. Imports recorded in Senegal, Mali or Niger prove neither zero domestic production nor national consumption. No comparable consumption series for non-producing countries is established here. Validate delivered price, losses and delivery frequency before scaling.

Customs flows do not prove zero domestic production. Small flows and unusual unit weights need checking before commercial decisions.

Central Africa: limits of the available evidence

In 2024, reported HS 080430 imports were 29.513 tonnes in the DRC and 0.112 tonnes in the Republic of the Congo. These small recorded flows do not measure consumption in either country and may not capture all regional channels. The consulted source does not establish a comparable series here for Gabon, Chad and the Central African Republic: missing data does not mean no demand or no production. A commercial assessment should verify local prices, hotel and wholesaler purchases, domestic supply, losses and transport costs.

Quality, packing and product channels

Agree variety, maturity, fruit weight, count, crown, contracted sugar content, cartons, palletisation and traceability. Match inspection and transport to remaining marketable life. Fresh fruit, dried pineapple, canned products and juice have different buyers and customs classifications. The table’s HS 080430 covers fresh or dried pineapple, not canned fruit or juice.
